When Was This House Built? Part 2

Understand the Details to Know a Home’s True Age

The second in a series will focus on some telltale signs that a house was built at the turn of the Century, after the late 1800’s Victorian Homes and before the 1920’s Colonials. In this 1900-1920 time period, quality craftsmanship met with advancements in home design and engineering, not the least of which were electric lights and oil fueled steam heat.


Some clues include include artistic touches like decorative brass door knobs and oak flooring with inlaid details while steam radiators, lots of sconce lighting are indicative of technology changes. However, some shortcomings include; frustrating sinks without mixing faucets, a lack of closet space and garages that were essentially an afterthought as car ownership was just taking hold.
