March 25, 2014You’ve heard about Montclair from a friend or colleague and are considering moving here. They say it’s diverse, has a decent commute, walkable village areas, good schools and is still relatively affordable.
That diversity description seems to come up in every discussion of Montclair. What does it mean though, exactly?
True, there are people with varied backgrounds and skin tones, but it’s more than that. Montclairians don’t just tolerate differences, they embrace them and believe the town is stronger for them.
Our denizens have a variety of talents and vocations; artists, lawyers, bankers, doctors, athletes, writers, entrepreneurs, etc. There is a wide range of income levels from 1%ers to those on public assistance. Multi-racial and same sex families, empty nesters, singles, traditional families, and expats are all indispensable to the fabric of the town.
We have children of varied abilities in our classrooms, and on our stages and playing fields. I was especially proud of Montclair at a recent middle school performing arts show. The kids that got the loudest ovations weren’t the most talented, but those that faced the greatest challenges getting up on that stage and their strongest supporters were their peers.
If you value diversity, Montclair may be the right place for you.
Come visit and plan to spend some time, because diversity isn’t just something you can see, it’s something you experience.
